After 10 years of searching for funds and their own vessel the local youth sail training association, Joves Navegants, through a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous, have acquired a 72´ blue-water, fast sailing ketch, SY Galaxie; the benefactor also donating a substantial sum of money to ´kick start´ the programme of bringing the yacht up to the required standards for taking young people to sea.
In the past, yachts such as ´Kaisei´, ´Atelante´, ´Vegewind´,´Inge´ and ´Marcus Aurelius´ have been chartered through generous donations from several organisations: Calvia Lions, Rotary Club, Pinmar, Squadron Yachts and Bay Entertainers with generous support from many local marine companies.
To co-ordinate the programme a team of yachtsman is headed by Niels Svendsen and Martin Johnson.
Also thanks and credit must be particularly given to Terry Purkiss, Kevin O´Regan, the Sanora crew, Chris Hogarth, Palma Engineering, Ecosse Diesels, Ian Lewis and Oscar Sierra safety company.
SY Galaxie is now under a Spanish flag and is owned by The Joves Navegants Trust and the yacht will be loaned to Joves Navegants Association to take youngsters to sea. The trust has also been set up to handle any charters and other activities that the yacht may be used for in the future.
The purpose of the Joves Navegants charity is to give local disadvantaged young people an opportunity to go to sea, teaching these young people to live and work together, to be self-reliant and supportive of others.
