Wining & Dining

WINING & DINING

This month I’d like to introduce you to three reasonably new places.

Going into the heart of Palma and down the pedestrian way next to Bar Bosch at Plaza Joan Carlos at the top of the Borne an excellent tapas bar has been opened.
The Lizarran is predominantly Basque inspired and apart from a menu they offer an incredible selection of imaginative montaditos- tapas on bread. They are all priced at 80 cents each.
Lunch times it bustles with local office and shop workers and I’m told it’s busy in the evening too.
With (I’m told by the manager) more than 150 different tapas continuously brought from the kitchen its best to sit yourself at the bar and bide your time as the different tapas come out.
Taberna Lizarran- C/Brondo 6 Palma. Tel: 971 721 819

Lizzie´s Place, a cafe, has just opened and is located opposite hotel Nixe Palace, next door to the Office bar in Calamayor.
It is a daytime cafe, bistro that opens from nine o’clock in the morning until late evening.
In the morning they offer English teacakes, crumpets, croissants and a selection of traditional breakfast dishes.
There is always a dish of the day at lunch time as well as ploughmans, quiches, jacket potatoes (various fillings) and all sorts of sandwiches, roast chicken + stuffing in a large soft white bap is a favourite.
Try their cakes, tarts or ice creams.
Afternoon and evening bar snacks are available all at sensible prices. Lizzies Place- Joan Miro 272 Cala Mayor. Tel. 971 401292.

If you’re in the Poligono Son Bugadellas in Santa Ponsa and feeling hungry try the "Grand Buffet" restaurant. This is easy to find at the north end of the poligono and if you take the slip road (off the main Palma-Andratx road) just before the "Alabama" restaurant you can´t miss it on the left.
They offer a serve yourself buffet from 13:00 to 17:00 with as much to eat and drink as you like!
On weekdays its 9 Euros and week-ends 12.
It has a good selection of starters, 3-4 hot dishes and plenty of fruit and yoghurts etc for a sweet course.

Since moving to the new premises in Portals Nous the Penny Roberts School of Cookery has been able to expand its areas of food and service courses. They have recently announce their second Food and Wine Evening to be held on October 29th and conducted by the wine company Miguel Torres, S.A., Delegacion Palma De Mallorca, represented by Romain, Yachting Branch Manager.
Penny Roberts says, "It will take the same format as before matching the wines with foods. The foods will include fillet of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fresh and smoked salmon, fresh fruit and pastries. Of course all these goodies come at a price but be assured there will be plenty for all so do please try and join us. The cost will be 25Es per person with an opportunity to buy some of the best Torres wines".
If you are interested in becoming more professional in the wine world please note that The Wine and Spirit Education Trust of London will be holding its second course in Mallorca at the School for four days at the beginning of December. This is a Professional Course with Examination and Certificate. Anyone seriously wishing to increase their wine knowledge for either professional or personal reasons will find the course informative, enlightening and stimulating. Please contact the School.
