SA LLOTJA

For lovers of really fresh fish, looking for a taste of the typical Mallorquin fishing harbour ambience, enjoyed in modern and comfortable surroundings, the new restaurant named,“Sa Llotja’’ right on the marina frontage at Colonia de Sant Jordi, is well worth a visit.

Although on the site of a former restaurant, the place was completely refurbished by its present owner before reopening at the beginning of April. In fact the whole sea front boulevard area of this small resort, close to the S.East corner of the island, is undergoing a total makeover, with new flagstones, pedestrian walkways, and attractive new wooden decking on the marina frontage, the work is scheduled for completion before the summer season gets under way.

The service was friendly and attentive with a wide selection of typical local Spanish dishes, of which Paella is said to be a speciality of the house! The fresh fish of the day comes straight from one of the small fishing boats, which are tied up in front of the restaurant, and a selection of fish are brought to your table on an iced platter, for you to choose from, or of course you can choose something from the standard menu.

We had a choice of Monk Fish, Scorpion, Dorada, Sea Bass or John Dory, and chose the latter, which has the local name of “Callo de San Pedro”. This was big enough for two, at a price of 18 Euros each including vegetables etc. and comes cooked in olive oil, garlic and sea salt, unless otherwise specified. We took it in this way and it certainly was a very tasty fish, accompanied by a nice selection of vegetables.

The wine recommended by the waiter, a very light red from Rioja- Martinez Lacuesta Crianza, was good value and very drinkable at 17 Euros a bottle.

For starters one of us had a small portion of Calamari’s and the other roasted green peppers, the desserts were Mousse de Yoghurt, and Coulant de Chocolat, both light and very tasty indeed!

Another feature of the restaurant, if you like to watch your food being prepared, is the open style kitchen all newly equipped in gleaming stainless steel, where you can observe the chefs at work on your meal if you wish to.

Final practical points about getting there, if your coming by boat, and you draw much more than 1.5 Metres of water, then anchor off, somewhere North of the small Isla de na Guardia, where you should find 3–5 Metres of water and then use the tender.

By road, head into Campos after leaving the C717 via Llucmajor from Palma, and follow the signs to Colonia de Sant Jordi, where the marina is at the southern end of the beach and promenade.
