One of the hotly contested new 30 year marina concession issues has been resolved, with the recent announcement by the Ministry of Public Works, that Club de Vela - the present incumbents at Andratx marina, have been awarded the new term after the previous one officially expired in 2002.
Coincidentally the announcement came on the same day as the storm broke over corruption allegations and the subsequent arrest of the mayor of Andratx.
It was also announced that the San Antonio marina concession in Eivissa was being renewed for 30 years.
The lead up to the final decision on Andratx marina, has been a long and bitter saga in keeping with several other similar battles for control of such lucrative marina leases.
The government minister for public works Mabel Cabrer, has been particularly in the firing line during the bid process, due to her long term involvement with Club de Vela, where she sits on the management committee, this has left her open to accusations of personal bias by rival bidders.
Monica Pozuelo the vice chairman to Cabrer in the public works dept. stated that the new concession would bring in just over one million euros annually, which is more in keeping with the governments expected revenue stream from their indirectly managed port concessions, and that these first two announcements will be followed by decisions on six other lapsed marina concessions before the year end.
