"SOFASURFERS" FILM REVIEW

APOCALYPTO
The other side of the story. While we’ve been told and seen all about the colonisation, there was always something missing: what was going on before that. This movie, written and directed by Mel Gibson will, transport you to the  Maya’s era, just before the arrival of the colonists. Excellent scenery and directing skills get mixed up to produce amazing chasing scenes and more. Very much worth watching.

You may have missed: D-TOX
This film with Silvestre Stallone is as ever with Sly taking the leading role, but the script is more Sly than you would expect. With a touch of “Saw”, and familiarity to the epic “Shining” this, though not an Oscar winner will have you glued to the screen until the final chapter. Tacky but well worth a watch.

BORAT
??? To say the least. I know Ali G’s humour has been questionable in the past, but mostly I loved it. Borat, unfortunately is a dismal attempt to create any form of humour, it varies between, disappointing, embarrassing (for him) and generally disrespects what ever whit he is poorly attempting to portray. We dare you to make it past the naked wrestling…
A total flop

ROCKY BALBOA
For a film which has been dragged out in the past and failed, this is an absolute winner. Though Stallone is an aging action star, he manages to pull off a great performance, not only in his writing of the film, but his athletic contribution during the action in the ring is almost the Rocky from thirty years ago. All in all it’s a great curtain call for a man who has, (although not in every film) portrayed the great legacy of the original Rocky Marciano. Great last gasp

LAURA´S LOG
It has been a month when I have witnessed the best – and the worst – of human nature.
Let’s start with the good bit! On a sunny Sunday morning I joined approximately 300 people for a sponsored walk around Magaluf. The aim was to raise money for the Portals-based charity Mediterranea to build a home for orphans in Ghana. There was music, dancing, clowns, fun and a really loving atmosphere. The whole event was a shining example of co-operation, mutual respect of differing cultures and unity in a common goal – to help others.
Fast forward a week ….and the story was very different!
The following Sunday there was suspicion, intimidation and even violence all because of an election. Some parties decided to bully, bribe and buy votes. One of my friends (all 5 foot 2 of her) was physically assaulted at a polling station for wearing a Union Jack flag to show that she could assist people in English if they needed help to vote.
The excuse I have heard since is that just 30 years since General Franco’s death ‘Spain is a young democracy’. Be this as it may, but the people who behaved so appallingly on the day of the election were old enough to know better.
Thankfully us Brits are made of stern stuff and I am pleased that nothing deterred the foreign voters who turned out in record numbers to exercise their democratic right. This was best demonstrated by the incredible result in Calvia where a large number of non-Spanish voters returned the PP candidate Carlos Delgado as mayor with a record majority. In contrast the mayor of Palma, Catalina Cirer did nothing to communicate with the 35,000 non-Spanish residents in her city and consequently she lost the council.
As the foreign population continues to grow on Mallorca its a sharp message to the ‘powers that be’ that things are changing rapidly on this island.
Looking ahead, we turn from politics to Pollensa where the international Music Festival begins at the start of July with concerts taking place in the open air Santa Domingo cloisters.
Some great artists are on their way to the island with Kool &The Gang, Lou Bega, Mungo Jerry and Mel C performing at the ‘Viva Mallorca’ show at the Bullring in June and Joe Cocker at the same venue a month later.
This month we also welcome the Spanish royal family to Mallorca for their annual month-long holiday at their home in Marivent. Maybe we will get a glimpse of the new baby the Infanta Sophia.
Finally for now, try to get to Alcudia on June 29th as the spectacular ‘Boat Procession’ is a wonder to behold.
Till next month, never let the bullies win, always be careful where you drop your anchor, and keep listening to Luna 100.3

EU CITIZENS CORNER
What to do if you want to get married in Mallorca.
The Department for European Citizens, at the regional Ministry of Immigration and Cooperation (Conselleria de Inmigración y Cooperación) get all sorts of queries from Europeans living in the region. The unit was especially created almost one year ago, in order to help all European nationals living in the region (or contemplating doing so), to settle into the island.
The multi-lingual team receives all kinds of enquiries, ranging from how to get a Spanish license plate and getting licenses to operate as a business, to finding the right school for a child with learning difficulties.
Recently, queries about the legal procedures involved in getting married have been trickling into the office… this spring it seems, love is in the air.

Here is the A-Z of getting married on the island.
If you are a not a Spanish national, but hold a European Passport, here is what you need to in order to get your marriage certificate here in Spain.
* Original birth certificate
This must be officially translated into Spanish by a legal translator and legalised in the country of issue (or in the British Consulate, here on the island)
* Proof of residence in Spain for a minimum of two years
Alternatively you can ask your consulate for a certificate stating that your country does not require you to publicly announce the marriage prior to the civil ceremony.
* Your passport, as well as the passports of the two witnesses.
If you have been married before, you need to provide a divorce certificate along with its legal translation into Spanish which should be legalised in country of origin, or by the consulate.

If you are a widow / widower, you need to provide your original marriage certificate as well as the death certificate. Both of these must be translated into Spanish and legalised in country of origin, or by the corresponding consulate.

All relevant paper work should be taken to the “Juzgado de Paz” of your municipality, where the partners to be married will need to be present as well as two witnesses.
