With the Spanish bid for the 2016 Olympics to be held in Madrid now formally accepted, the Balearics Sports Federation are to reccomend that Palma de Mallorca should be named again as the venue for the sailing events, as it was for the 2012 bid which was eventually awarded to London.
However there will no doubt be intense competition from the mainland, particularly from Valencia which will be the recipient of large amounts of public funding to improve its infrastructure before the next America´s Cup in 2009.
The report to the Madrid Olympic Committee will point out that the Moll Vell area in Palma is ready and waiting with 10,000m2 of sea frontage suitable as a base for the Olympic sailing yachts, with ample spectator viewing and good road access from the airport etc.
Meanwhile the new President of the Balearics Port Authority Snr. Francesc Triay has spoken of the need to spend over a billion Euros on the future development of port infrastructure in the area, stating that the optimisation of commercial cargo and passenger handling at Dique Del Oeste in the port of Palma will be the main priority, requiring major external funding and taking up to 10 years to complete.
This prioritisation would seem to end any hopes of new moorings for large yachts close to the Moll Vell and the cathedral as previously envisaged.
Since taking over the Boatyard Palma concession at the beginning of this year, the management of Servicios Tecnicos Portuarios (STP) have launched themselves full scale into the expansion project for the yard, which promises to reach “new horizons” in terms of modern boatyard facilities in The Balearics.
When the reforms are completed the yard will be one of the largest in the Mediterranean in terms of surface area, moorings and lifting capacity dedicated to yacht refit and repair.
In total the reconfigured yard will offer 55,000m2 of hard standing for vessels up 60m, over 50 berths for vessels up to 90m, 6 keel pits for sailing yachts up to 60m, and 2000m2 of workshops. Plus all mains services such as 3 phase electric's, compressed air and waste disposal - thus providing first class support services for the repair and maintenance of all types of yachts.
The picture seen here was taken during August, but by the time you read this the yard expects to have the groundworks and main services completed, and all the hard standing area ready for use, this using concrete laying machinery working at an incredible speed of 1000m2 per day!
Yard Manager Bobby Cooper told us that bookings are already being taken, and that the enlarged facilities are expected to be operational by the end of September.
