SOLAS Consolidated Edition 2009 -  now available.

A new consolidated edition of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the most important of all the international conventions dealing with maritime safety, is now published and available in Palma
It provides an essential reference for maritime administrations, ship builders, ship owners and operators, shipping companies, equipment manufacturers, training institutes and all others concerned with the SOLAS requirements.
SOLAS is one of the oldest maritime safety conventions, the first version having been adopted in 1914 following the sinking of the Titanic. Since then, there have been four more versions of the Convention. The present version was adopted in 1974 and entered into force in 1980, and has subsequently been amended many times to keep it up to date.
The SOLAS Consolidated Edition 2009 provides a consolidated text of the SOLAS Convention, its Protocols of 1978 and 1988 and all amendments in effect from 1 July 2009. It includes new regulations adopted since the 2004 edition was published, including regulation V/19-1 on long-range identification and tracking of ships; regulation II-1/3-8 on mooring and towing equipment; and regulation II-1/35-1 on bilge pumping arrangements.
The SOLAS provisions for corrosion protection have been updated and expanded, with the new requirements incorporated in a revised chapter II-1, which includes probabilistic requirements for subdivision and damage stability.

LAURA´S LOG
Do you remember when we wrapped up in big coats, scarves and boots? It wasn’t all that long ago and now its too hot to even wear pants!
If you are a boaty type and out on the sea it’s the best place to be during these sweltering summer months. Of course it won’t be long before the autumn storms, and given the heat we have had so far this summer we are due some big weather later in the year.
Have you noticed how tetchy people get when the temperature is high? Nerves fray and people snap! Its fine for the holiday folk who lounge around and jump in the pool (and good luck to them) but if you actually have to DO anything it’s a sweaty effort.
If you have air conditioning, love and appreciate it!
Talking of actually doing something, I recently interviewed Carlos Bestard, the President of EporE, on the radio show. “What is EporE?” I hear you mutter. Well, it is an association called “Europeos por Espana” which is actually doing something to improve the lives of us residents here on Mallorca. It is campaigning on various issues including protesting about the huge hikes in electricity prices, the return of the Residencia Cards, the right to vote in regional elections and various other issues that bother local folk. Recently, as you will read elsewhere in the Islander, it has been instrumental in pulling together various strands of the nautical industry to create a forum for campaign and change.
The association was conceived by Calvia councillor Kate Mentink and was set up two years ago. Since then its membership has been growing and people are sitting up and taking notice (in particular the Spanish press). This all bodes well for the future and it is encouraging to know that ordinary people have got a voice to have their say. However, the more people, the louder the voice. So if you want to lend your support to EporE check out the website at: www.epore.org.
Finally, (as I know they are far too modest to blow their own Vuvuzela), well done to Peter and Marleen Franklin from the Islander who took part in the round Dragonera island kayak race and raised a fabulous sum of money for the Cancer Support Group here on the island. What a team! Once again it shows that people can do extraordinary things when they put their minds to it!
If you have anything that you would like the island to know about via the radio show contact me at laura@englishradiomallorca and I will do my best to get the word out.
You can hear radio in English every Saturday and Sunday morning from 10am till 1pm on 92.9FM or online at: www.englishradiomallorca.com.

Laura Penn can be heard on English Radio Mallorca, 92.9FM Radio Marratxi
